A Review Of Community Foundation Grants – 1944-2004

Since its inception in 1944 the Mount Vernon Community Trust, and now the Community Foundation of Mount Vernon & Knox County, has had a proud tradition of providing timely financial assistance for important community endeavors.

The following timeline highlights almost 60 years of giving to community projects by the Foundation through its unrestricted funds. The list does not include millions of additional dollars, which have been distributed through designated funds and scholarship funds.

1940s-1950s Selected Grants from Unrestricted Funds

  • $5,000 for Mount Vernon City Planning Study.
  • Two grants totaling nearly $71,000 for Mercy Hospital expansion.
  • $91,481 grant for Mount Vernon Hiawatha Park public swimming pool.
  • Establish $75,000 fund for the construction of a public library.

1960s Selected Grants from Unrestricted Funds

  • Rebuild the 1883 fountain on Mount Vernon Public Square; install lighting and landscaping in the square.
  • Begin tradition of annual payments for planting flowers on Mount Vernon Public Square.

  • Administer gifts of more than $100,000 to Martin Memorial Hospital.

  • $52,000 for refurbishing and adding air conditioning to the Memorial Building theater.
  • Coordinate raising of more than $200,000 (including $150,000 from the Community Trust) to build Yellow Jacket Stadium complex at M.V.H.S.
